Donato Martinez reads his poetry at the Libros Lincoln Heights bookshop.
On a Saturday evening in late April, the door of the Libros Lincoln Heights is propped open. Inside, 18 local poets pack the narrow single-room bookstore, waiting for a chance to read a poem or two at this month’s open mic in front of an enthusiastic audience. To see the full article, click here.
Since the last Community News in September, a lot has happened in the literary community. Writers have hosted book release parties for their new books; hosted readings and open mics to bring the far-flung community together and to speak out against injustice; and a new independent bookstore has opened, among other events and news. This Pasadena Author Shows Us How Love Survives the Headlines
“Love in the Time of Hate” documents the thoughts and actions of two people in love, living almost unfazed in a world of hate. Maybe our loves become more passionate because of the hate around us. Maybe we can be better lovers because of the hate.
Susana Porras shows a contrast between the hate all around us and the love that she finds possible. She shows that love overrides hate, and the better we love the better we are at dealing with hate. It’s about therapy for troubled times. To read more, click here.

Allen’s wit and emotional passion fill her gems. She covers many topics --- nature, sex and relationships, pets, her losses, and moments of pleasure. Other times, she seems to see and feel the world as others do --- some of whom may have been patients of hers. To read more, click here.
LA Poet Society Open Mic

Susana Porras is a writer, amateur musician, and community organizer from Pasadena. She holds an M.A. in Sociology and a B.A. in French from CSULA. Fluent in French and Spanish, she has lived in both France and Guatemala.
This year, she published her second and third books—Danny’s Trails: Mossley, England and Love in the Time of Hate—both chronicling her travel adventures at home and abroad. Her first book, To Compostela and Beyond! Details her walking pilgrimage across 500 miles of northern Spain with her 73-year-old father. All books are now available at Los Libros.

In Danny’s Trails, Susana Porras and illustrator Dan Makin transport readers to the charming countryside of Mossley, England — a place where every footpath tells a story. Through her vivid storytelling and love of local the great outdoors, she celebrates the beauty of slow travel and the unexpected friendships formed along the way. This delightful children’s book blends history, humor, and heartfelt moments, making readers feel as though they, too, are wandering the lush trails of Northern England.
